Is The Adult Coloring Fad Over?

No! Oops, sorry for yelling. But seriously, speculation is flying lately that the craze that has swept the nation for the past few years of adults wanting to color may be coming to an end. Where’s this all coming from? Let us explain.

Earlier in the month, with the New Year here, Barnes and Noble released its sales data. For the first time in about 3 years, the company posted a decline in sales. Why? Well, there were several reasons, but one of them was that sales of coloring books and supplies were low. Adding that adults didn’t come out in force like previous years to buy, especially around the holiday season.

So why the decline? We have several theories, which we have mapped out before for you. Are these concrete? Nope. However, they do make you raise an eyebrow and wonder:

More Options

Alternative options outside of coloring books are popping up more and more every day. A few years ago, you’d walk into a store and have the option of coloring books. Classic versions of illustrations one after the other. Today, new ways of coloring are popping up. For example, we’ve discussed what’s beyond the adult coloring craze in the past, which includes options like Dot to Dot Puzzles, Hand Drawn Letters and more. Many of these options aren’t coming from big publishers either. In fact, many of them are coming from independent illustrations who are using platforms like amazon and social media to get their coloring options out there, seen and bought. This theory alone could greatly impact a traditional bookstore like Barnes & Noble.

More Brands

Wow. The continued rollout of major brands with coloring books is astonishing. Any, why not! A brand that owns the rights to any kind of graphic elements can easily turn them into colorable illustrations probably overnight. In the grand scheme of things, it’s a fairly easy decision if there’s the need. We saw this most recently with the popular HBO Series Game of Thrones and several popular consumer media publishers as well. Even more recent, Disney has released a coloring app with its popular movies as illustrations.

More Digital

Lastly, it’s very well possible that the reason traditional coloring books for adults are declining is because more and more of them are discovering the versatility of coloring apps. As the ability to color with devices becomes more advanced, adults may be ditching the coloring books for options such as coloring apps, like MyPingo. If you really think about it, it does make sense. Just like magazines and newspapers moved mostly online, perhaps the adult coloring book is as well. For us, it’s a no-brainer, more tools for coloring, more colors themselves and way, way more illustrations compared to any coloring book or a pack of pencils.

English Royalty Ousted as Fans of Adult Coloring Books

That’s right! The very essence of royalty in England has admitted to being huge fans of adult coloring books. No, it’s not the Queen herself, but pretty damn close. The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, married to Prince William, loves to color!

While the everyday activities of the Duchess are much a mystery, several publications, including Vanity Fair and USA Today, have noted that Kate can’t get enough of the coloring books. According to Vanity Fair, Johanna Basford, author of adult coloring book Secret Garden: An Inky Treasure Hunt and Coloring Book, she noted, told reporters that “Prince William actually said that his wife likes to color in the Secret Garden, which was really sweet.” l detox.” The article continues noting that the book has sold more than 1 million copies and has been translated into 14 different languages.

The Princess isn’t the only celebrity who’s gone public with their coloring habits. As MyPingo previously noted, celebrities like Justin Bieber, Zooey Deschanel, Kim Ki-Bum and Nigella Lawson are also huge fans of spending some time between the lines. The Biebs outed himself on Instagram of all places. The pop-star, with his 75M followers, posted a semi-NSFW pinup girl and noted he spent 30 minutes coloring it.

At the end of the day, when we all thought we probably couldn’t be any further from royalty, it seems we are all spending more and more detoxing and relieving stress with our adult coloring books. So here’s a special message to the Princess, we have something you’ll love at MyPingo. What’s Beyond the Adult Coloring Book Craze?

NOTHING! Just kidding, there is always something that comes next after a craze hits the world. For adult coloring, the final jury is still out, but there are some new kinds of books popping up that just might take the reigns for 2017 and beyond.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the new book styles that are being published still focus on adult’s inner children, as well as providing stress relief and tranquility. Even better, many of them still have a focus on coloring or artistic tendencies. Out of all the book styles the WSJ reviewed, the below are the ones we think may become the next big thing:

Dot to Dot Puzzles

Mindless is awesome. It’s one part of coloring that exists. Even though you need to pick what colors you want and what goes best, the action of coloring between the lines is, in fact, pretty mindless and a big reason the stress relief happens. Dot to Dot Puzzles are pretty similar. While you have to pick the colors you use, the action of connecting the numbered dots with those colors is pretty stress relieving. The end result? A beautiful photo emerges after you take the time to go from dot to dot. The WSJ spotlighted the “Ultimate Dot to Dot: Extreme Puzzle Challenge” by Gareth Moore, who has created 20 or so of these puzzles for consumption.

Hand Drawn Lettering

In the world of Adult Coloring, you often see illustrations with letters. People inherently like to color in letters and see the words emerge from the illustration. In that same context, hand drawn lettering books have started to emerge as a hybrid to coloring. Similar to having a preset illustration to which you color, the hand drawn lettering books give you a preset illustration of words to sketch and then color in with your colors of choice. Creative Market recently spotlighted 15 of these books, including The Art of Hand Lettering by Helm Wotzkow and Little Book of Lettering by Emily Gregory.

Doodling Time

Another major stress reliever for many people is simply doodling. While not so attached to the adult coloring craze and something most of us have been doing since elementary school, books for doodling are starting to pop up. The idea is that by starting a doodle, the book owner can then finish it with ease. The WSJ once again goes on to spotlight Nate Padavick, “whose own work has a free-wheeling and doodley quality to it, is promoted as a way to boost memory and inspire creative confidence.”

These Big Brands Have Adult Coloring Books?

For many people, when they think of coloring books they think of what their children may like to color. Perhaps it’s Sesame Street, Thomas the Train, or even Care Bears. As the rise of adult coloring continues, the coloring books themselves are expanding and big brands are leading the way.

Today, big brands, such as HBO and National Geographic, have ventured into creating their own coloring books. According to Forbes, action star Jean Claude Van Damme has his own adult coloring book! However, the big brand’s entering the space doesn’t stop there.

Last year, Game of Thrones released its own coloring book and it was published by Random House with illustrations by George R. R. Martin. Other illustrators involved included Yvonne Gilbert, John Howe, Tomislav Tomić, Adam Stower, and Levi Pinfold, according to Culturess. This year, we are getting another version of the Game of Thrones adult coloring book and surprise, surprise it’s just in time for the holidays. This version is different than last years and includes more than 60 pages of illustrations ranging from characters to the Seven Kingdoms.

Most recently, Crayola, the company known for making crayons for children, has teamed up with Brit & Co to create a 78-page adult coloring book called Pattern Play. The illustrations were crowdsourced from the online communities of Brit & Co as well as 99 designs, according to Fortune. With a focus on Pop Culture, the book will run you $9.99 and is available at Target, both in store and online.

Brands jumping into the adult coloring ring is no real surprise. In 2014, more than 1 million adult coloring books were sold. In 2015, the number was at 12 million. Our partner, Blue Star Publishing knows this all too well. It’s why we have partnered with them and their illustrators to bring you MyPingo, the adult coloring app with hundreds of illustrations to choose from daily. Download and check it out today!
